Many have led to weddings, life long successful cattle partnerships and in many cases the swapping of genetics that have improved both herds and the breed. A breed with a progressive junior program is a breed that is constantly growing.

My wife of fifty yrs is the driver and I ride shotgun and I still open gates.
My driver(dad) back then I wish I still had. He taught me farming and cattle. I know what it’s like delivering calves and colts around the clock and farming in between.
I think everyone should have to ride shotgun.

The best part is that you didn’t take your childhood for granted. You used all those wonderful memories to further your life in a positive way.

Comment on 5 Reasons Sheep Might Actually Be Smart by Teri https://ranchhousedesigns.com/5-reasons-sheep-actually-smart/#comment-406 Fri, 08 Apr 2016 20:21:46 +0000 https://ranchhousedesigns.com/?p=9036#comment-406 We had a ram that could unlatch the gate. We tried several ‘livestock proof’ latches and nothing worked. Luckily he stayed in the yard and away from Mom’s flowers. Our sheep were my playmates and best friends growing up. Even more so when I was old enough to show. Best years of my life and I miss them dearly. Thanks for great article!

They have what we call a fight or flight response and in their case it is a flight response. They do not have horns like cattle do for defense; they do not have sharp teeth to bite with like other animals such as dogs; and they do not have sharp beaks like chickens to pick at you. All they have is their hard skull to “butt” you and believe me from experience that hurts. I have tunis sheep.

As a breeder of sheep & goats I have to say sheep are smarter for many reasons, my biggest is when its feeding time the sheep go straight to their corral to eat, my goats like to try & avoid their corral at all costs delaying everyone’s feeding time. Love the sheep!
